SKYLIGHT INSTALL
skylight install

Want to open up a dark interior kitchen or bath? Want to make the beauty of the open sky part of your design plans? Consider installing a skylight, suggests Shannon Weigand, a certified master designer with Ellis Kitchen and Bath Studio in Columbus, Ohio. “It’s a way of introducing more natural light into a room, bringing more of the outdoors inside,” she says. “Where there’s no exterior wall to put a window into, you can create a window in the ceiling. And many skylights can be opened for ventilation in the summer.”

A skylight installation happens in two phases: rooftop and interior. Depending on the circumstances such as roof pitch, interior light shaft depth and shape and weather, installations can take between a half day up to three days.

ADVANTAGES

Energy Efficiency

Skylights cut down on the earth’s emissions and the need for electric lighting naturally. Using daylight not only reduces energy costs and consumption, but also reduces the demand for unsustainable power that is currently challenging the health of the world’s environment.

Ventilation

An electric venting skylight will open to produce a “passive air conditioner.” Through the chimney or exhaust effect they create, the warm air is drawn up through the venting skylight, providing a cooling effect and fresh air throughout the house.

FAQS

How long does it take to install a skylight?

This depends on factors such as the type and location of the desired skylight. Tubular skylights (“sun tunnels”) generally take a couple of hours, while other types generally take up to a day to install.

Why should I have a skylight installed?

Skylights have many advantages such as lighting up an otherwise dark room, passive solar heating potential, and ventilation.

What type of skylights are there?

There are three main types of skylights: fixed, tubular, and vented. Here are a couple quick fact about each type:

  • Fixed- designed for installation in out of reach areas, ideal for any room, do not provide ventilation.
  • Tubular- ideal for enclosed spaces such as hallways and closets, fits into tight spaces.
  • Vented- easy to clean, provides ventilation for rooms with excess moisture such as kitchens or bathrooms, available with manual or electrical opening operation.
How much does a skylight cost?

This depends on factors such as skylight type, roof type, and finish type.

FAQS

How much does a roof repair cost?

This depends on the size, material, and design of the roof. When comparing roof types, composite shingle roofs are generally much more affordable to repair than wood or metal roofs.

How can I prevent roofing repairs?

While one cannot necessarily prevent roof damage due to natural forces, a homeowner can cut down on the cost of roofing repairs by regularly inspecting and cleaning their roof. Proper gutter drainage is also important in keeping water off of your roof. Damage that is spotted early can be easily repaired and save on repair costs.

How do I know if I need to repair my roof?

Besides the more obvious sign of water leakage, we recommend inspecting your roof at least once a year to look for things such as cracked, warped, or missing shingles as well as signs from inside the structure such as peeling wallpaper or cracked paint. If you notice any of these signs it is probably a good idea to call one of our roofing experts over to take a look.

My roof has a leak. What should I do?

First, our team must identify if it is a leak or a repair. A leak is generally small and not considered a repair. In this case, one of our roofing experts will fix the leak in a few hours, or more if it is difficult to identify. However, if our roofing expert finds that the damage is more extensive it is then considered a repair. If a repair is needed we will create an estimate to determine the time and cost of the services.

WATERPROOFING
Roof waterproof

Waterproofing is the treatment of a surface to prevent the passage of water. We specialize in sheet membrane waterproofing, using PVC membranes to do the job.

Tile and shower pan waterproofing:

To waterproof a tile or shower pan, we install a barrier -a PVC plastic sheet or membrane- that is intended to entrap water that penetrates the shower floor tile, grout, and mortar under the tile and force the water to flow to the drain. It prevents water from reaching the sub-floor and surrounding wall enclosure.

Walking decks waterproofing:

Many homes have an outside deck/patio that need to be waterproofed. The solution for this is IB Deck Shield, a skid-resistant membrane. This waterproofing system is made from a composite layer of durable reinforced PVC film.
